Friday Food Finds: Japanese Snacks, Glitter Gum, Avocado Toast Marshmallows, and More!

Spring has sprung, and while the temperatures may not reflect this change in season, the latest food offerings have embraced outdoor flavors with open arms. Lucky for you, we’ve rounded up some of the most innovative products to hit shelves and sampled them on our bi-weekly Chub Chub Chowdown segment on The Taylor Strecker Show.

Check out the full segment here and a round-up of our very opinionated feedback below.

Magnum Ice Cream (Dark Chocolate Raspberry)

Go big or go home, they say, and nothing is bigger than Magnum. The beloved ice cream company has found a way to encase its pints with hard shells of chocolate (dark, white, milk, and hazelnut) to provide an interactive and delicious eating experience. Though the flavors are simple, the taste is superb…creamy, crunchy, and everything you could ever want in a frozen dessert. Whatever you do, don’t read the nutrition facts on the back of the label. You will shed tears.

XO Marshmallow (Avocado Toast)

We’re not entirely sure how we feel about savory foods presented as desserts, but kudos to XO brand for capitalizing on a basic bitch’s favorite trend. If we’re being frank, these didn’t taste amazing. Unique? Sure. But if you’re going to give us avocado toast, we’re going to need a little less sugar and a lot more pepper or lemon juice. Serve these as a novelty item at parties, but not as a birthday gift to your BFF Becky. She’s going to want to eat the real thing.

Bokksu Japanese Snack Subscription Box

This is one of the most exciting finds in a long time. Bokksu‘s Japanese subscription box service is changing the game with its seasonal offerings of Tokyo’s most crave-worthy snacks, both sweet and savory. From rice crackers and Pocky to dehydrated strawberries and sour plum fries, there was nothing in the box we didn’t enjoy. It’s an amazing gift for the food lover in your life, so we’ll take 10, rush-ordered, please. Thank you.

Spindrift Sparkling Water (Grapefruit)

The LaCroix fad shows no signs of stopping, so Spindrift has cleverly entered the game by adding a small amount of fruit juice to its line of sparkling waters. The result: tingly deliciousness. Though some flavors are better than others (grapefruit is a win and strawberry is not particularly appetizing), it’s a great way to add more water into your life because, let’s face it, you’re probably not drinking enough.

Waterloo Sparkling Water (Grapefruit)

This is your standard sparkling water. No calories, no sugar, no gimmicks. While it’s not as aggressive as other brands in the bubble department (which could be a good or bad thing, depending on the consumer), we’re not sure what separates it from the norm. The packaging is cute, we guess?

R.e.d.d. Superfood Energy Bar (Salted Caramel)

These definitely taste better than your average energy bar, but at the end of the day, an energy bar is still an energy bar. We love the fact that R.e.d.d. prides itself on all-natural ingredients, including caffeine, and this salted caramel flavor is pretty decent. We love the crunch of the chia seeds, as well, but one thing we don’t love: sugar content. 14 grams is pretty steep, though not out of the ordinary for a bar in this ultra-competitive market. As a meal replacement, sure, but we’d opt out of consuming these as mid-afternoon snacks. We don’t want the extra calories.

Ice Breakers Ice Cubes Glitter Gum (Summer Snow Cone)

We’re not ones to freak out about something as simple as gum, but OMG—this ish is as fabulous as the glitter its made with. The flavor is equal parts refreshing, nostalgic, and sweet, and has us completely ready for summer. YUM!
