You’ll Fall for This Five Ingredient Apple Dumpling Recipe

These easy apple dumplings are the ideal fall dessert and they only take five ingredients. Plus, they freeze beautifully.

Have you checked your Instagram feed as of late? If you have, you know everyone is out in the apple fields picking Galas, Winesaps, and Red Delicious to their heart’s content with multiple posts on social media of picking, eating, and of course, the apple pies that follow. Well, I like to bake, but I’m not the most skilled when it comes to crimping, the butter/flour ratio, lattice tops, and all that jazz. Many don’t realize, however, making a fantastic pie takes a significant amount of skill.

So, when I get home from the apple orchard and have seven bags of apples to get through, I need some fast and easy ways to enjoy the bounty.

From this need for speed and deliciousness, apple dumplings were born. What’s an apple dumpling, you ask? Let me explain.

The Beauty of Apple Dumplings

You may be picturing some sort of soup with floating apples, but nope, this is even easier than that. All you need is five ingredients and almost zero baking skills, and you can pull off this fun little dessert that freezes well, is ready in half an hour, and is the baked apple of your dreams—interested yet? Peel and core your favorite apples, make a little flour/sugar/cinnamon mix, and roll out a sheet of your favorite puff pastry. You can get fancy with Dufour or grab a package at Trader Joe’s.

After giving them a nice roll in the flour mix, wrap ’em up in the puff pastry and give them a quick blast in the freezer. The chill helps the puff pastry stay in place as the middle gets warm, soft, and gooey.

Better yet? Make a whole bunch ahead of time and take them out of the freezer as the dumpling craving erupts. After having this, you may just quit that lattice top for good.

Easy Apple Dumpling Recipe

The pat of butter inside each dumpling is optional, but highly recommended. The egg wash is optional too, but will give your dumplings a glossier shine.

Five Ingredient Apple Dumplings

Prep Time: 15 minutesCook Time: 45 minutesServes: 6
Ingredients
  • 6 apples of your choice, peeled and cored
  • ½ cup AP flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 large sheet frozen puff pastry, defrosted
  • ½ stick unsalted butter
  • 1 egg, for egg wash
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Peel and core the apples.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Roll each apple to cover with the mixture.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry and cut into squares. Place one apple in the center of each square and add a tablespoon of the flour/sugar mixture to the center well. Top with a small pat of butter (optional). Pull up the sides of the pastry to cover the apple. Pinch at the top to seal closed.
  5. Brush with egg wash for a glossier finish (optional).
  6. Place apples in the freezer for fifteen minutes to chill the pastry. The time in the freezer will prevent the puff pastry from sliding down the apple. Also, they keep for up to two weeks, so keep them for an apple dumpling craving!
  7. Remove from the freezer and place on a cookie sheet. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, based on the size of the apple.
  8. To check if they are ready, slide a knife into the apple. It should be very soft and slip right out.
  9. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream or both!

The Best Crock Pot Hot Wings for Every Occasion

We love chicken wings any which way: baked in the oven, deep-fried, grilled, or crisped in the air fryer. But these Crock Pot wings are a thing of true beauty. Honestly, there’s not much to it—yet it turns out such spectacular results. You simply dump all the sauce ingredients into the slow cooker, then add the wings and toss to coat, and let it all cook for four hours. They’ll emerge totally tender and full of flavor.

To get a nice crisp exterior, you bake the wings in the oven for 30 minutes once they’re done, and in the meanwhile, simmer the sauce with a bit of sugar for a thicker mixture to pour back over the wings when you’re ready to eat.

If you’re short on time, you can use the same trick to finish off a batch of Instant Pot wings; cook them in a flash and then crisp them in the oven. (And taking a cue from the Instant Pot wings recipe, you can also cook chicken wings from frozen in the Crock-Pot!)

The Sauce

We love buffalo wings, but this is a nice change of pace, less tangy and more smoky, yet still just as easy to throw together. Choose your favorite hot sauce and pour it into your slow cooker along with a little umami-boosting soy sauce, liquid smoke, butter, tomato paste, and a few seasonings (oregano, onion powder, and garlic powder).

The teaspoon of sugar added at the very end, when you’re thickening the sauce to finish the wings, helps balance out the smoky, spicy savor without making it too sweet. But as always, adjust everything to your taste. And enjoy!

Ingredients
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 (5-ounce) bottle hot sauce
  • 3 pounds chicken wings
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
Instructions
  1. Melt the butter and add it to the crock of your slow cooker along with the oregano, onion and garlic powders, soy sauce, tomato paste, liquid smoke, and hot sauce. Whisk everything together to form a sauce.
  2. Add the wings to the crock and stir to coat them with the sauce. Cover the crock and set the slow cooker to high. Cook for 4 hours.
  3. Just before the wings are done, heat the oven to 400°F and get out 2 baking sheets. With tongs, remove the wings from the slow cooker and arrange in a single layer on the baking sheets.
  4. Place the wings in the hot oven and bake until they’re browned and the top surface is crisp, about 30 minutes.
  5. While the wings are baking, transfer the cooking liquid from the slow cooker to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the sugar. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat to low. Simmer until the sauce has thickened, about 10 minutes.
  6. Remove the wings from the oven and transfer to a large bowl. Add the sauce and gently toss until the wings are evenly coated. Serve while hot.
