Prince George’s School Lunch Menu Will Make You Cry Into Your Tuna Sandwich

That desk-side salad is about to get a lot more depressing.

As if being a simple, nine-to-five plebeian wasn’t tragic enough, our favorite little prince (George, in case you’ve been living under a rock or doing non-royal things) has been enjoying a preschool lunch menu fit for a king.

At Thomas’s Battersea School in London, students, a.k.a. snot-nosed kids learning their ABCs (we love Matilda’s mom for that one), have probably never touched a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, pizza Lunchables, or Fruit-by-the-Foot in their entire lives. Instead, these uber lucky (or not?) four year-olds are treated to healthy, carefully-curated meals that rival some of the most extravagant offerings found in five-star restaurants. We promise we’re not bitter or anything.

While we certainly applaud the educational institution for providing a wholesome, nutritious, and specialized diet for its geniuses of tomorrow, some of the dishes are just the slightest bit over the top. And we kind of love it. (Just kidding. We actually hate it. There are only so many more Pret a Manger salads we can stomach.)

Here are just a few examples:

Main Courses: Freshly Prepared Authentic Lamb Ragout with Garlic and Fresh Herbs; Freshly Prepared Turkey and Ham Pie Topped with Puff Pastry; Fresh Baked Mozzarella, Basil, and Tomato Panini

Fish Options: Freshly Prepared Poached Haddock with a Poached Egg; Baked Smoked Mackerel on a Bed of Puy Lentils; Freshly Prepared Salmon Fillet with a Salsa Verdi

Vegetarian Options: Freshly Baked Courgette, Halloumi, and Beetroot Layer Slice; Freshly Prepared Tomato and Avocado Bruschetta; Freshly Prepared Chick Pea, Spinach and Sweet Potato Curry

Side: Mediterranean 50/50 Cous Cous and Quinoa

Dessert: Freshly Baked Portuguese Egg Custard Tart with Strawberries; Steamed Jam and Coconut Sponge with Organic Custard; Organic Pip Tropical Fruit Smoothie

Moral of the story: It* pays to be a prince.

Shake Shack Is Releasing a Boozy Milkshake Inspired by ‘Will & Grace’

Shake Shack excels at two different things: food (obvi…even Ina Garten can’t resist their chicken sandwich) and innovative food and pop culture mashups (we’re still drooling over the Doughnut Plant concrete “Jelly’s Last Donut”). Keeping in line with the latter, the New York-based hamburger joint will be releasing two Will & Grace-themed milkshakes that, quite frankly, sound like something we’d absolutely want to sip on during the show’s premiere on Sept. 28.

Available from Sept. 18 to Oct. 1, the Will & Grace duo will feature a booze-filled (appropriate) Jack and Karen featuring prosecco with strawberry frozen custard, whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles, and raspberry dust, as well as a Will and Grace with cinnamon marshmallow frozen custard with Shack fudge, whipped cream, and cinnamon sugar.

While the idea of an alcoholic and s’mores-inspired shake probably sounds appealing to millions of TV watchers, the limited edition flavors will only be available at two New York locations (Herald Square and the Upper West Side) and two in Los Angeles (Hollywood and West Hollywood). That certainly warrants a major “whomp, whomp,” but nobody is stopping you from pouring a few shots of your favorite bottle into a homemade shake. (If you’re hoping to amp up the Will and Grace variety, we’d recommend a good spiced rum or marshmallow-flavored vodka.).

Those who are lucky enough to live on either coast and snag the delicious, albeit somewhat unseasonal treat, your indulgence is worth all the empty calories, Shake Shack will be partnering with GLAAD and NBC to donate $2 of each shake to support the advocacy group’s efforts to “share culture-changing LGBTQ stories.” And there’s nothing like breaking your post-summer diet for a good cause.

Needless to say, you don’t need to be excited about the Emmy-award show’s return to enjoy these creamy concoctions. That’s just the cherry on top.

These Cheap and Easy Meals Have 5 Ingredients or Less

easy basic risotto

Please believe me when I say I understand how tempting and easy it is to way, way overdo it in the keeping your kitchen stocked department. I might even pass for a minimalist were you not to take a peek in my cupboards and refrigerator, at which point the cat is very much out of the bag. Hi, my name is Maryse and I’m addicted to buying more groceries and kitchen supplies than a single person could ever possibly need.

In an attempt to try and get a handle on this little problem, I’ve recently taken up challenging myself to make meals that skimp on the surplus without sacrificing quality or flavor. And, as it turns out, there are plenty dishes in which five ingredients are all you need to make a totally top-notch dinner. (For the record, I don’t count staples like salt and pepper or cooking fats like oil and butter and ingredients, those are just necessities of life.) Check out nine favorites.

Basic Risotto

easy basic risotto

Chowhound

I’m a big fan of dishes that make cooking cheap and easy without tasting cheap and easy. Case in point: classic Italian risotto. Five basic ingredients—rice, chicken, broth, onion, a little white wine, and grated Parmesan—plus a good, strong stirring arm are all it takes to treat yourself to a luxury-grade dining experience. This lusciously creamy, cheesy dish is the definition of restrained elegance (basically a rice version of the equally awesome Cacio e Pepe pasta), and a hearty, filling meal at that. And this is only the blank canvas version, imagine the possibilities on those nights when you get to splurge for six, seven, or even eight ingredients. Get our Basic Risotto recipe.

Pea and Mint Soup

Lauren Caris Cooks

Frozen peas show off their prime time potential in this bright, mind-blowingly easy vegetarian soup. As is the case with any successful minimalist meal, the key is being smart about selecting supporting characters; you’re casting for function and flavor. Here, fresh mint packs a punch of bold, bright freshness to complement the sweet peas, while a simple baking potato helps provide thickness and texture (no heavy cream needed!). Get the recipe.

Easy White Chicken Chili

easy 5-ingredient white chicken chili

Gimme Some Oven

Here’s a clever idea for how to stretch the bounty from one five-ingredient-or-less dinner into another. Shred the leftovers from last night’s finger-lickin’-good roast chicken and throw it in a pot to simmer with some white beans, chicken broth, salsa verde, and ground cumin. And there you have it: fifteen-minute chicken chili. And just in time for football season too. Get the recipe.

Shrimp Scampi

shrimp scampi

Chowhound

I can’t think of a better ingredient duo to carry a small team to victory than butter and garlic. The powerhouse pair are basically the culinary equivalent of having a really great dance partner, they make whoever they’re paired with 10 times better. In this recipe, for example, they’re the Johnny to shrimp’s Baby, lifting the shellfish up to delectable heights. Serve over rice or tossed with pasta. Get our Shrimp Scampi recipe.

Pumpkin Alfredo

pumpkin alfredo pasta

Pinch Of Yum

Fall into the spirit of the season with this autumn-inspired variation on the creamy, cheesy pasta classic. Try playing up the flavor of the pumpkin purée with crunchy brown butter breadcrumbs or crushed pecans. Get the recipe.

Baked Coconut Curry Cod

baked coconut curry cod

Simply Whisked

It may not get the top billing in the seafood department the way salmon and swordfish do, but cod is a great choice for those times when you’re buying on a budget. The moist, flaky fish soaks up flavor like a sponge—in this case a sweet-spicy coconut milk, ginger, and green curry broth—not to mention the baking-in-liquid technique used here is a foolproof method for those “but I always overcook fish” naysayers. Get the recipe.

Eggs in Purgatory

There is nothing hellish about yolky baked eggs in a juicy, chunky, red pepper-flecked tomato sauce. Trust. Sop it all up with a fat, crusty piece of toast (seasoned with garlic and olive oil for extra dramatic effect) and really savor the sin of this perfect breakfast-anytime dish. Get our Eggs in Purgatory recipe.

Crock Pot Pork and Apples

slow cooker pork and apples

Eat Live Run

Pork and apples, a match made in sweet and savory heaven, becomes even more desirable in this clever set-it-and-forget-it application. After six hours in the crock, not only is the meat pull apart-tender, but the thick slices of apple and onion come out the way any sensible person would choose to eat their fruit and veggies: Basted in pork fat. Get the recipe.

Beef Stroganoff

beef stroganoff

Stay Gold Autumn

Sure, you could easily cook up a tasty, simply marinated steak or basic burger and stay under the five ingredient cap. But neither really quite feels like a complete meal, right? Instead, satisfy your craving for beef with this meaty noodle dish that takes the Cliff’s Notes route to sauce by using canned cream of mushroom soup. Get the recipe.

S’mores Cookies

Chocolate Chip and Marshmallow S'mores Cookies

I had a single unopened sleeve of graham crackers, several assorted packages of chocolate, and half a bag of somewhat stale mini marshmallows, all unearthed from the pantry on a rainy late-summer/early-fall afternoon.

What’s a gal to do but make chocolate and marshmallow S’mores Cookies?
