Picnic-Perfect Potato Salad Recipes That Don’t Use Mayonnaise

Potatoes may be life, but for many Americans, mayonnaise is vomit-inducing. This means the beloved potato salad, typically a combo of the two ingredients, gets tossed aside during summer picnics. Whomp, whomp.

Since we never want to see food go to waste, why not create a recipe that everyone will enjoy? We’ve rounded up nine mayo-free variations of the classic potato salad that are drowning in flavor and not in cream. Try them out for yourself and let the tubers do the talking.

Potato Salad Carbonara

For anyone who has dreamt of the day when potatoes can take the place of pasta, dream no more. Potato salad carbonara is a rich and creamy reality, once and for all.

Warm German Potato Salad with Bacon

The German potato salad isn’t novel, but making it warm and tossing it with bacon is the upgrade we never knew we needed in life. Take a bite out of this sodium heaven. Get the recipe.

Herbed Potato Salad

Chowhound

Seeing green is a great thing when it comes to money and fresh herbs. Toss those herbs with potatoes and you’ve got a picnic side dish that will have everyone talking (and needing a toothbrush). Get the recipe.

Marinated Potato Salad with Fennel

Chowhound

Don’t fear fennel! If eating black licorice sounds more like punishment than pleasure, you may love its less offensive, herbaceous counterpart. And if that flavor is still too potent, roast it in olive oil for some added sweetness. Get the recipe.

Mediterranean-Style Mustard Potato Salad

Frankly, mustard is the superior condiment to mayonnaise. Getting rid of the latter means you should absolutely double up on the former. Pairing it with capers, red onions, and herbs also makes too much sense. Get the recipe.

Roasted Sweet Potato Salad

Flip the script by introducing a bright and orangey sweet potato with spicy Southwestern flavors. A serving of this pretty stuff will have you saying “yeehaw.” Get the recipe.

Greek Tzatziki Potato Salad

We love a good Tzatziki sauce and this dish is smothered in it. Greek yogurt > mayonnaise any day. But if you come across Mr. Hellman, you didn’t hear that from us. Get the recipe.

Lemon, Rosemary, and Sun-dried Tomato Potato Salad

If you’re looking for something light and refreshing, lemon serves as an excellent base. The rosemary and sun-dried tomato serve as the figurative cherries on top. Get the recipe.

Avocado Potato Salad

The creaminess of mayonnaise can be imitated with the mighty avocado. Seriously, is there anything that avocado can’t do? Get the recipe.

Baskin-Robbins Is Making It a Lot Easter for You to Binge on Ice Cream

Everyone loves the ice cream man, but not everyone loves the idea of chasing down a truck in the heat of summer for an overpriced Bomb Pop or off-brand Drumstick. In fact, we pretty much loathe the cheerful melody that sends us into full panic mode as we rummage for loose change and bolt out of the house like we’ve just spotted BeyoncĂ©.

Luckily for us, Baskin-Robbins has announced plans to up your ice cream obsession by eliminating the struggle to get it. In partnership with DoorDash, the ice cream chain will be delivering its signature flavors to 22 cities across the United States. And to quote our favorite food personality Ina Garten (as one should), “how easy is that?”.

Those salivating for a scoop can place an order via DoorDash’s app or website, but like all good things that make us lazier than we should be, the service comes at a cost: $2.99 on top of the price for your pint.

A great idea? Obviously. Worth it? That’s entirely up to you. We’re certainly willing to cough up the extra cash to avoid the humidity and remain one with our couch.

To celebrate the launch of delivery options, Baskin-Robbins will be giving away free samples of its Mint Chocolate Chip Polar Pizza at stores on July 14 (which seems a bit contradictory to the delivery theme, but it’s free ice cream so #whatever.) The company will also be delivering the Polar Pizzas to several children’s hospitals across the country.

If you’re worried about your ice cream melting, don’t fret. DoorDash’s insulated carriers will do the trick, though you’ll have to forego the whipped cream, which apparently doesn’t travel well under any circumstance.

And if this all just sounds too ridiculous to handle, feel free to one up all of us by making your own homemade ice cream. Just don’t forget the cherry on top. They’re in season.

McDonald’s Is Playing Classical Music to Curb Your Drunken Behavior

It’s no longer shameful to say that you’ve recently dined at a McDonald’s. In fact, after a night of boozing and unfortunate decision-making, it’s now customary to wear that order of three Quarter Pounders and 20-piece chicken McNugget with pride. (You and your grease-deprived stomach deserve the indulgence, after all.)

McDonald’s, arguably the best remedy to hunger-induced vodka binges, agrees wholeheartedly, but they’d like for you to control your reckless behavior and drunken antics, thank you very much. According to The Mirror, the fast food giant has been playing classical music to discourage the fighting, loudness, and overall debauchery associated with a night of hard partying.

“We have tested the effects of classical music in the past and played it in some of our restaurants as it encourages more acceptable behavior,” a McDonald’s spokesperson says. “Typically classical music is played from early evening onwards, and in some cases, on certain nights in a small number of restaurants.”

While we’ve yet to see this musical genre replace the Top 40 we hear stateside, Bach and Mozart have been reported at location in Glasgow, Scotland and Stockport, England, as well as Gloucester and Liverpool with positive results.

Why is this the case? Well, we’re all clearly aware of classical music’s calming effect, but The Mirror cites a Duke University study that scientifically credits this feeling to the release of dopamine and the elimination of stress hormones. And you don’t have to be sober for this magic-in-piano-form to take place.

Needless to say, we welcome the fancy addition and hope it becomes a more permanent fixture. Is there really any better way to feel a little less guilty about our 3 AM drinking and eating habits? Frankly, none that we can think of.

Play on, Ronald McBeethoven. Play on.
