Pumpkin Spice Snacks That Go Way Beyond Lattes

Each fall seems to bring even more pumpkin spice products to shelves—and we’re not complaining. From the ubiquitous Starbucks PSL to pumpkin spice donuts and pumpkin cream cheese for your bagels, there are fall-flavored treats practically everywhere you go.

Of course, you can make your own pumpkin spice goodies at home, but it’s hard not to be tempted by the scores of ready-made treats beckoning from grocery store shelves, ice cream cases, and coffee shop menus. After all, there’s only a limited window during which you can enjoy them! (Even though it seems like pumpkin spice season starts sooner and sooner every year and eventually we may be grumbling about PSLs in July.)

Despite the name, “pumpkin spice” doesn’t necessarily denote the inclusion of any pumpkin in the given food or drink. Rather, it refers to a combo of fragrant, warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cloves that we’ve come to associate with pumpkin pie—and more broadly, with fall, and holidays like Thanksgiving. You can thank (or curse, depending on your proclivities) McCormick for popularizing the pumpkin spice blend and first marketing it to consumers.

These days, there’s really almost nothing people won’t put pumpkin spice into. See: pumpkin spice pasta and pumpkin spice salsa, even pumpkin spice morsels to replace or augment chocolate chips in baked goods. Pumpkin beer has become a big autumn tradition too, and though some brews actually do contain squash, plenty don’t. (Heads-up: you can brew your own pumpkin spice ale or porter at home!) And then of course, there are always pumpkin spice candles and body lotion to torment you with their delicious, non-edible scents.

If you’re not a fan of pumpkin spice, that’s cool. You can leave the sweet treats to the rest of us (and no need to act all superior about it, either). For those who can’t get enough of the evocative fall flavor, feast your eyes—and maybe your stomach—on all these edible pumpkin spice tidbits you can buy.

Pumpkin Spice Cheerios

Amazon

Start the day off right with pumpkin spice cereal, whether you like frosted Mini Wheats or Special K. If you’re more on-the-go, grab some pumpkin spice cereal bars, granola bars or Larabars. But Cheerios are classic, pretty healthy, and unadorned, so the pumpkin spice flavor really comes through. Bonus points for using real pumpkin puree! Buy them here.

Pumpkin Spice Pop Tarts

Pop Tarts

Pop Tarts are technically a breakfast item too, though whether they should be is up for debate. The frosting makes them best suited to those with a sweet tooth. Buy them here.

Pumpkin Pie Rice Krispies Treats

Amazon

Rice Krispies treats are a classic, and a staple of many Halloween parties, so these are a natural autumn evolution. Buy them here.

Pumpkin Spice Oreos

Amazon

The list of flavored fillings Oreo hasn’t tried is getting shorter every day, but these pumpkin spice beauties are clear winners. They do swap out the usual chocolate cookies for vanilla, which may taste better but deprives us of a Halloween-appropriate orange-and-black color combo. Buy them here.

Pumpkin Spice Cookie Butter

Amoretti

Okay, this one is an add-on item, but if you’re buying a bunch of other pumpkin spice delicacies (or, like, anything else), that’s not an issue. You can also get pumpkin spice peanut butter. Spread these on basically anything stationary—if you can stop eating them by the spoonful. Buy it here.

Tastykake Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Amazon

You may have heard that Hostess is making candy corn flavored snack cakes, but if you’re a pumpkin spice die-hard, you’ll want these Tastykake creations instead. Buy them here. (Or if you don’t do snack cakes but you’re still craving a little fall treat, try these healthy pumpkin dark chocolate muffins that literally only take a minute to cook!)

Pumpkin Spice Milano Cookies

Pepperidge Farm

Remember a time before everything was pumpkin spice flavored? Pepperidge Farm remembers. But they’re not living in the past, and neither should you! They make pumpkin cheesecake cookies in addition to this seasonal Milano variation. Buy them here.

If you’re more of a soft-baked cookie person, try these, but for a super crunch that stands up to a dunk in coffee, get these limited edition biscotti. Buy them here.

Conversely, if you’re all about super smoothness, try pumpkin spice pudding. Sort of like pumpkin pie without the crust. Buy it here.

Pumpkin Spice Hershey’s Kisses

Hershey’s

Looking for Halloween candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters? Pumpkin spice Hershey’s kisses or pumpkin M&Ms would obviously both be worthy choices, if you could resist eating them all yourself. Buy them here.

Milk Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Caramel Squares

Amazon

For a more sophisticated yet still fall-ish chocolate choice, look no further. If you prefer chewy caramels, try these, but Ghirardelli has mastered the art of ooey gooey caramel in thin, snappy chocolate shells. Buy them here.

Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows

Amazon

These might seem a little weird, but they might also make amazing autumn s’mores. Peeps peeps have a pumpkin spice option too, though their white fudge coating might get in the way of the pumpkin spice flavors of these plain marshmallows. Buy them here.

Pumpkin Spice Syrup

If you’re looking for a pumpkin spice syrup designed to flavor drinks, try Torani, but this one is perfect for drizzling on your pumpkin pancakes, waffles, or desserts. Buy it here.

How to Dress Up As Your Favorite Chefs for Halloween

Julia Child

So you want to dress up as a chef for Halloween? No offense to the costume aisle, but we all know that standard baggy checkered pants and chef’s coat routine just isn’t going to cut it. There are some real characters to tap into here.

Of course, you could go super low-budget with it. For guys there’s the obvious, “throw on a blond wig and chef’s jacket and shout expletives at everyone until you’re red in the face” á la Gordon Ramsay. And ladies, you could go for a Giada-style thing by slipping into something body-conscious, rocking long wavy brown hair, and showing off how authentically you can pronounce Par-ME-GEE-Ano Reg-EE-Ano.

Or, if you’re willing to invest in a couple more props, you could easily channel the iconic looks of a number of celebrity chefs. Here are six creepily clever ways to impersonate your favorite food star.

Sean Brock

Sean Brock

Conde Nast Traveler

Everybody knows that if you want to channel the modern day chef, you’ve gotta ink up. So sure, you could take the costume easy road and slip on some generic fake tattoo sleeves and a chef’s coat and claim to be a Food & Wine “Best New Chef.” But if you’re more about serving an attention-to-detail look, why not double-down on these temporary tats to recreate the vegetable patch bounty displayed on Sean Brock’s arms? Throw on some dark-rimmed specs and a signature tattered baseball cap (or this one, if you want to be really authentic) to complete the transformation into this Southern food heritage-celebrating chef.

Julia Child

Julia Child

The Errant Aesthete

The basic recipe here is simple: Don a retro dress, kitten heels, apron, and a string of pearls or a vintage scarf tied into an ascot. But to really master the art of impersonation and transform yourself into the baroness of “bon appétit,” you’ll need to have a curly brown bob, Ecole des Gourmandes badge, and, last but not least, a rubber chicken to whack the hell out of when you’re good and loaded.

James Beard

James Beard

The Chic

To treat this Halloween as a tribute to the legendary American cook and author, you won’t need more than a bald cap, gray mustache, and signature overalls, button down, and colorful bowtie. Just make sure to have a couple of your coveted award medals on-hand in case you run into any dressed up chefs deserving commendation.

Mario Batali

Mario Batali

Footwear News

You won’t need molto in the way of props to embody the big-time celebrity chef, especially if your wardrobe already includes a fleece vest and showcases a love of the color orange. Take out the tangerine-tinted shirt, tie, cargo shorts, wig, whatever you got, just don’t forget the signature crocs.

Guy Fieri

Guy Fieri

Fanpop

Want to see a really spooky Halloween trick? Just put on a bleached blonde wig and goatee, retro bowling shirt, a couple pieces of mannery,  and wrap a pair of shiny cycling sunglasses around your neck, and magically, you’ll start shouting scary things like “We’re riding the bus to Flavortown!” and “This is money!”.

Swedish Chef

The Swedish Chef

Disney

Dedicate your look this Halloween to the OG of celebrity chefs, your boy from back in the day on the Street, The Swedish Chef. The iconic muppet’s look is easy enough to recreate, you just need some untamable ginger brows and matching stache, a floppy chef’s toque, pink bow tie, blue-striped button down, and white apron. And don’t worry, all the drinks at the party will take care of the requisite talking gibberish bit.

Maple-Glazed Chicken with Caramelized Onions and Pears

Maple-Glazed Chicken with Caramelized Onions and Pears

In New England, where I live, there are so many grand maple trees that the syrup goes into everything.

You often find it in pots of baked beans instead of molasses, as well as in all kinds of cakes, pies, and other sweet desserts.

Maple syrup also makes its way into simple weeknight dishes like this skillet chicken recipe, where it turns into a glaze.
