Life is full of daily struggles, but the struggle to find an affordable avocado is probably the most real (For some of us, that is. And if that person is you, please tell us more about your stress-free life because we’re slightly envious.). But how have we reached this point? Will we ever NOT shell out nearly three dollars for one—we repeat—one piece of wrinkly green fruit? The short answer: yes.
Change is on the horizon for the avocado industry and it’s coming in the form of long-awaited price stabilization. According to Bloomberg, avocados may be more expensive than ever, but the surge has calmed ever-so-slightly this month.
“Prices in the foreseeable future will stabilize a little, and you won’t see a sharp incline,” said Robert Bonghi, director of procurement and pricing at Produce Alliance. “Growers are trying to put more trees in the ground to keep up,” but “you’re not going to see ten avocados for a dollar,” he added.
Avocado’s seemingly overnight popularity is to blame for the nationwide sticker shock. With nearly double the rates of consumption from a decade before, that’s a hell of a lot of supply to meet the avocado trend demands (but guacamole and avocado toast are soooooooo good). Luckily for us, 2018 is expected to be a big crop season, which means our cravings should be more than satisfied at a fraction of the cost. Additional inventory will also be tapped domestically from California, though the majority of imports will continue to come from Mexico’s Hass variety.
Needless to say, we’re relieved that our grocery store bill may be getting some much-needed relief, though we’re pretty sure that difference will be made up with the country’s next expensive culinary trend (in which case, you should probably be stocking up on chilled red wine, filipino food, and anything infused with charcoal.)
