The first Friday in June is one of summer’s most glorious food holidays—National Doughnut Day! Naturally chains like Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme, and Tim Horton’s get in on the action, providing us with a bounty of free baked goods. But apparently other decidedly non-doughnut brands are infringing on this turf too, and in some of the most gimmicky ways possible
Take Burger King‘s “Whopper Donut.” Their latest marketing stunt is literally a burger with a hole in it. That’s it! They just took a standard menu item and punched out the middle. To be fair, they do serve the center cut-out on the side as a free slider, so you’re not getting any less of a burger. It’s still a standard Whopper, just compartmentalized into separate parts. While it doesn’t make it any less of a dumb idea, at least it doesn’t create additional food waste.
l would love to meet the executive who came up with the idea and congratulate them for this ingenious concept. I can’t wait to see what they come up with for National Ice Cream Day. (Spoiler alert: I bet they’ll just stuff a burger in a cone!)
The Whopper Donut will only be available on June 1 (National Doughnut Day, of course) at the following five locations:
- 128 Tremont Street in Boston
- 1100 – 5th Street in Miami Beach
- 1601 N. Hacienda Boulevard in Los Angeles
- 327 West 42nd Street in New York City
- 2450 S 1900 W in Salt Lake City
If you happen to be lucky enough to live near one of these cities and want a savory bite to complement an actual doughnut, then, by all means eat a burger with a hole in it to keep with the theme. In the meantime we’ll be shaking our heads in shame and judgment. Ronald McDonald would never stand for this.
