Welcome to Chowhound Recommends, Chowhound’s weekly series where our staff shares our favorite food and kitchen items around a central theme. This week we’re getting lucky with our favorite products inspired by St. Patrick’s Day. We left this week’s version a little open to interpretation—whether the product is directly associated with the good ol’ Irish or it’s just a green item we love, keep reading to see how we’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with our beloved product picks.
As food writers, editors, producers, and social media managers, we’re constantly scouring the market for the latest and greatest products. And when we find a product we love, we want to shout it from the rooftops! We’re packaging up our weekly finds and sharing them with you, because we think you’ll love them too. Product Pick: “Ovenly” Cookbook
When St. Patrick’s Day comes around I use it as an excuse to bake with Guinness, and the Black Chocolate Stout Cake from Ovenly is the perfect recipe. It’s a show-stopper of a cake, but baking it is relatively quick and easy (something I’m always looking for in a recipe). It originally calls for their Salted Caramel Cream Cheese Frosting but I went with their Chocolate Buttercream to really have a chocolate overload (and to make it a bit easier). I can’t recommend it enough, just don’t skimp on high-quality cocoa—you’d regret it since that’s the main flavor of the cake. Want to make it extra Irish? Use Kerrygold butter, my personal favorite! The gluten-free peanut butter cookies are also killer. Two reasons to get this book ASAP!

Product Pick: Zapp’s Potato Chips
Of all Irish food-things, my favorite by far are potatoes. Iconic in our understanding of Irish cuisine, even though they were not native to the Emerald Isle (they migrated from the New World). I love them in all shapes and forms, and this is my favorite potato chip brand: Zapp’s. They’re New Orleans kettle style chips—cooked in peanut oil; crunchy and delicious. They have a great range of flavors—all of them influenced by Louisiana cuisine. My top picks are the Cajun Dill Gator-Tators and the Voodoo chips. I love the packaging so much—check out the little voodoo dolls!

Product Pick: Talenti Gelato
While I really wanted to share the new Talenti Gelato Layers Mint Fudge Cookie flavor that debuted last week, to my dismay I couldn’t find it anywhere. So I’m reverting to my classic favorite green ice cream in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day—Talenti’s Mediterranean Mint gelato. They use real mint leaves and steep them for 45 minutes to get the perfect mint flavor. If you’re really feeling extra, make some Guinness chocolate syrup to drizzle on top! You can find this on Amazon Prime Fresh and Jet.com’s grocery delivery service.

Product Pick: McCann’s Irish Oatmeal
I love Ireland and Irish food, and St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect excuse to stock my pantry with all manner of Irish goodies (and my fridge with Guinness, of course). This steel-cut Irish oatmeal is definitely there along with the soda bread and Irish butter. I don’t even like oatmeal and I love this stuff. It’s super hearty and creamy, and you can tell you’re putting great stuff in your body while you’re eating it. A little hack to try out is to add a bit of salt instead of sugar. It’s tasty but also great if you’re trying to avoid sugar and don’t like sugar substitutes. It’s a game-changer!
