6 Easy Mother’s Day Gifts for the Mom Who Says She Doesn’t Want Anything

Welcome to Chow with Me, where Chowhound’s executive editor Hana Asbrink shares all of the irresistible things she’s cooking, eating, reading, buying, and more. Today: Mother’s Day gifts for the mom who says she doesn’t want anything (aka, gifts she’d never return or re-gift).

Ever since I was little, I’d ask my mother what gifts she’d want for any of the big occasions—Mother’s Day, her birthday, Christmas—and she’d invariably answer the same way: “I don’t need anything.” If pressed? “Make me a card.”

As a new-ish mom myself, I find myself relating to her more than I ever have (on this and other matters). Getting a beautiful present is always nice, of course, but more than anything, my taste leans more practical: Is it a product that will help save me precious time that I could otherwise spend kicking back with my little family? (Bonus if it’s something that doesn’t add too much to the clutter that I’m constantly trying to minimize in our N.Y.C. apartment.)

Whether it’s a sweet little plant that will guarantee to bring a smile to her face or an easy-breezy way to help get her groceries for a week (or longer), here are a handful of thoughtful gifts for all the moms in your life. I know my mother and I would happily use all of these.

The Daily Reminder

I love a good useful gift, and this insulated mug happens to be both functional and beautiful. The pretty, double-walled ceramic tumbler from Acera will not only keep your cup of joe warm, but the tourmaline lining’s charged negative ions apparently help purify whatever liquid’s inside. The ceramic wall is a bonus for those who like acidic coffee, tea, and citrus water.

The Future Heirloom

I’m an admitted cookbook junkie, and always manage to find room for just one more. “Heirloom Kitchen” from Anna Francese Gass weaves powerful stories from immigrant women, from all reaches of the world, with more than 100 recipes from their respective homelands. It’s a celebration of culinary traditions, sacrifice, love, and the beauty that is American food. (Also available on Kindle for those looking to minimize their book collections.)
