The Biggest Food Trends of 2019

You know how one year can sometimes just run into the next? That’s basically how we feel about 2017, 2018, and 2019. Like, when it comes to food trends, where did rainbow bagels end and CBD-infused foods begin?

But, once we really honed in on what foodies went for this year, a couple of things became apparent: In 2019, Americans wanted more comfort foods (and less carb-free ones)…but we weren’t opposed to routinely slurping down celery juice in an effort to combat the fried food #bloat. And, as always, people wondered what in the heck J.Lo eats to look that good at age 50—and Google searched it often.

Curious what else was popular? Keep scrolling to feast your eyes on the top food and diet trends of 2019.

1. Feel-Good Foods

While 2018’s top recipe searches on Google revolved around the keto diet (think: “keto cookies” and “keto pancakes”), this year’s top trending searches all had to do with comfort food. The top five recipes people Googled in 2019 were Shepherd’s Pie, Chicken Parmigiana (aka, chicken parmesan), Ham Glaze, Charoset (a Hebrew fruit and nut paste), and Snickerdoodle Cookies. All the comfort, all day long.

2. Oat Milk

Oat milk, a plant-based milk that’s derived from whole oats, was a hit in the states in 2019—but it’s been gaining popularity in Sweden, where it was first developed, since around 2016. If you are a fan of plant-based milks, you’ve likely heard about Oatly, which is the O.G. oat milk brand that started it all.

Fans of Oatly love this product because it tends to blend better (or at least more similarly to traditional dairy milks) when added to hot drinks, like coffee, than other plant-based options, such as almond milk. Oat milk also has a nice, neutral, earthy flavor—and trust us when we say you can’t go wrong when ordering it as your milk substitute in a cappuccino. (All the foam!)

3. Popeyes Chicken Sandwich

Popeyes added its breaded chicken sandwich to its menu on Aug. 12 of 2019, making it one of the chain restaurants most popular product launches in 30 years—thanks to the already chicken-crazed market that was previously sparked by Popeyes competitor, Chick-fil-A.

What’s surprising about this trend isn’t the fact that this fast-food sandwich basically went viral. Instead, it’s that the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich fell within the top 10 Google recipe searches of 2019. That means, people were actually trying to recreate this fast-food phenomenon at home. Good job, people. That’s real ambition.

4. Celery Juice

Alright, alright. We know there are a lot of controversial opinions surrounding celery juice—but we’d be leading you astray with this trend list if we didn’t include it. Celery juice has been (and still is) a massive trend among health and wellness enthusiasts who swear by drinking it daily (usually first thing in the morning before eating breakfast).

Just be aware: While celery juice is credited with healing all kinds of health ailments—from poor digestion to chronic illness—there isn’t a ton of science out there yet to back up these claims.

5. The Impossible Burger

Vegans asked for a plant-based burger that actually tasted like meat and the Impossible Burger delivered. The Impossible Burger is a meat imitation product created by Impossible Foods, a California-based vegan food production company. Its soy-based burger meat is so similar in taste to ground beef, it’s almost difficult to believe that it’s not meat—even to regular meat eaters who’ve tried it.

In 2019, several fast-food chains that we never thought would start serving veggie-friendly options did. For instance, Burger King now has an “Impossible Whopper” on its menu, and White Castle has an “Impossible Slider.” And, you can also now find Impossible Foods’ Impossible Burger Products in select grocery stores nationwide.

6. CBD-Infused Food Products

At this point, the conversation surrounding CBD, which stands for cannabidiol and is the second most prominent active ingredient in cannabis, usually sends people in two very separate directions. Either you are totally onboard with the trend and hardcore adopted CBD oil into your lifestyle for its calming and anxiety-relieving properties—or, you are sick and tired of hearing about it altogether. Either way, if you’ve been wanting to try out this seriously huge 2019 trend and work it into your diet, you can find CBD oil used in everything from cookies and candy to sparkling water, dry matcha tea mixes, hot sauce, honey, and more.

7. Intermittent Fasting

If we had to guess, we’d say you likely know at least one person who tried intermittent fasting this year. After all, this dieting style was a super popular health and wellness trend in 2019 and even garnered the number one spot out of all diet-related Google searches for the year. While we’re calling it “a diet,” it’s really more of a set of rules that dictate when you can eat and when you fast. Those who partake in IF, typically swear by the 16/8 plan, which says you can only eat for eight hours per day—and for the other 16, you’re fasting. When fasting, you can obviously have water and some people will even allow themselves to drink some sort of broth if they need a little something extra.

8. The Dr. Sebi Diet

People on the hunt for a new way to eat and avoid disease frequently Googled “The Dr. Sebi Diet” this past year. Also called the “Dr. Sebi alkaline diet,” this eating regimen aims to fill you with certain foods that will rejuvenate your cells and eliminate toxic waste as they alkalize your blood. This way of eating was started by Alfredo Darrington Bowman, a self-educated herbalist, who, despite his diet’s name, does not hold a Ph.D. and is not a medical doctor.

Keeping this in mind: His line of thinking says that disease is caused by a build-up of mucus in certain areas of the body, and he argues that by eating in a way that alkalizes the body (aka, makes it less acidic), you can better ward off bodily diseases. By adhering to a strict diet of vegan foods, which includes fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, oils, and herbs, you’d be following the Dr. Sebi plan, a much-talked about diet in 2019.

9. The Noom Diet

Noom isn’t so much a diet, but rather a lifestyle and wellness program that’s accessible via an app and gives you all the tools needed to better succeed at losing weight without having to hire a health coach. Noom showed up at number three on this year’s list of diet-related Google searches, and we can totally see why. This program acts as your virtual step-by-step guide toward revamping your lifestyle.

This year has brought many blessings. @nbcsnl, thanks for being one of them. #TheBestIsYetToCome ❤️

A post shared by Jennifer Lopez (@jlo) on

In 2019, the “Jlo diet” was one of the top 10 most-searched diets on Google, which makes total sense. Jennifer Lopez is now 50 years old—yes, you heard that right (50!)—and she’s still running around stage rocking the same skimpy barely-there bodysuits she wore years ago. Lopez credits her rockin’ bod to her celebrity trainer, David Kirsch, who coaches her through rigorous workouts and periodically puts her on highly strict no carb, no sugar diets.
