Year in Search: The Most Googled Food Terms & Phrases in 2019

It’s hard to imagine life before the internet. As much as anything else, it has expanded the food world with instantaneous access to unique recipes, exciting culinary narratives, incredible photography, and information that helps to broaden our understanding of food culture, creating a richer environment to engage on a global scale.

best in blue7 Fabulous Products in 2020's Color of the YearIt’s often the case that what we search for on Google (and elsewhere) reflects the larger conversation around food, which is why we always look forward to Google’s annual Year in Search as a snapshot of what caught our attention and piqued our interest over the past 11+ months.

From trendy chicken to fad diets, recipes and even where we traveled in 2019—presumably to eat—here are some of the most-searched food terms and phrases in 2019, according to Google.

Most Searched Recipes

Shepherds Pie – 2019 was, let’s say, uncomfortable at times, so it’s no surprise this ultimate Irish comfort staple was top of mind (and search). Get our Shepherd’s Pie recipe.

Chicken Parmigiana – See above. Chicken parm somehow makes everything OK. See for yourself with our great Chicken Parmesan recipe.

Ham Glaze – The only thing better than a big ham is a big glazed ham, and people turned to the web to find out how it’s done. Try this Ham recipe with honey mustard glaze.

King Cake – With associations ranging from Christmas to Mardis Gras & Carnival, this festive cake is cloaked in lore and marked by celebration. Mardis Gras 2020 is not far off so get ready with our King Cake recipe.

Most Searched Diet Terms

Intermittent Fasting – Not eating between the hours of 8 PM and 12 Noon the following day— also known as intermittent fasting—was definitely the keto diet of 2019. See the Best Foods for Breaking Intermittent Fasting.

Keto Ultra Diet – Speaking of which, while most of learned about keto in 2018 or earlier, something called the Keto Ultra Diet jumped into the zeitgeist this past year. It’s essentially the keto diet supplemented with all-natural diet suppressants and garners mixed reviews from health professionals.

Noom Diet – Do you even noom, bro? This app for personalized nutrition and calorie counting was big in 2019. 

Dr. Sebi Diet – This trendy diet claims to detox the body, fight disease, and improve overall health by alkalizing the blood. Worth noting that the founder, Alfredo Darrington Bowman, is not an actual doctor.

Endomorph Diet – Designed specifically for folks with a slow metabolism, this diet sparked some serious curiosity in 2019.

Sirtfood Diet – This trendy flash diet popular in the U.K. claims Adele and Pippa Middleton as subscribers, outlining a specific list of “sirt foods” to “activate your skinny gene,” including kale, walnuts, and red wine. OK, we’re listening. 

Most Searched Travel Destinations

The Maldives – No short trip, but some of the world’s best deep-sea diving and breathtaking topography keeps this small chain of islands in the Pacific on everyone’s travel wishlist.

Japan – Rumor has it this little island nation has a few foods stops worth checking out. Fancy an Omakase perhaps?

Alaska – Come for the wild-caught salmon but stay for the elk burgers. Alaska was hot (for a change) in 2019.

New Orleans – I don’t know if it’s valid to still call New Orleans an “underrated” food city, but it’s still one of my personal favorites, and whatever you do, don’t skip Frenchmen Street.

Bora Bora – The tiny island in French Polynesia is famous for quaint beach bungalows surrounding a dormant volcano at its center.

Mexico – Mexico City continues to capture the attention of foodies and culturistas alike.
