Pumpkin Spice Snacks That Go Way Beyond Lattes

Each fall seems to bring even more pumpkin spice products to shelves—and we’re not complaining. From the ubiquitous Starbucks PSL to pumpkin spice donuts and pumpkin cream cheese for your bagels, there are fall-flavored treats practically everywhere you go.

Of course, you can make your own pumpkin spice goodies at home, but it’s hard not to be tempted by the scores of ready-made treats beckoning from grocery store shelves, ice cream cases, and coffee shop menus. After all, there’s only a limited window during which you can enjoy them! (Even though it seems like pumpkin spice season starts sooner and sooner every year and eventually we may be grumbling about PSLs in July.)

Despite the name, “pumpkin spice” doesn’t necessarily denote the inclusion of any pumpkin in the given food or drink. Rather, it refers to a combo of fragrant, warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cloves that we’ve come to associate with pumpkin pie—and more broadly, with fall, and holidays like Thanksgiving. You can thank (or curse, depending on your proclivities) McCormick for popularizing the pumpkin spice blend and first marketing it to consumers.

These days, there’s really almost nothing people won’t put pumpkin spice into. See: pumpkin spice pasta and pumpkin spice peanut butter, two among many such examples. Pumpkin beer has become a big autumn tradition too, and though some brews actually do contain squash, plenty don’t. (Heads-up: you can brew your own pumpkin spice ale or porter at home!) And then of course, there are always pumpkin spice candles and body lotion to torment you with their delicious, non-edible scents.

If you’re not a fan of pumpkin spice, that’s cool. You can leave the sweet treats to the rest of us (and no need to act all superior about it, either). For those who can’t get enough of the evocative fall flavor, feast your eyes—and maybe your stomach—on all these edible pumpkin spice tidbits you can buy.
