Easy Homemade Hummus

Easy Homemade Hummus Recipe

One of the best reason to keep a few cans of garbanzo beans in the pantry? To make hummus! It’s so easy to make in a food processor, takes all of 5 minutes.

You’ll need some canned (or already cooked) chickpeas, tahini, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. Purée everything, top with a few lightly toasted pine nuts and some chopped parsley and voilà, you’re done!

Onions That Won’t Make You Cry Are Finally Here

It took over 30 years of research and development, but it looks like scientists finally got it right. Tearless onions are finally here. The news is enough to bring tears of joy to our eyes! And yes, we recognize the irony in that.

After decades of careful cross-breeding, loads of farming and diligent research by Bayer Crop Science, the cry-free onion, known as a Sunion, has been perfected. In terms of taste, the Sunion is supposedly sweeter, milder, and crunchier than the typical bulbous vegetable, making it perfect for cooking. But still, the best part is that it won’t make you cry!

So how does this miracle onion work? When cut, typical onions release a compound known as lachrymatory-factor synthase which increases over time. Your eyes produce tears in response to the sting it causes as a means to reduce the irritation. But in Sunions, the compound actually decreases in pungency so the gas isn’t released. And your face remains dry as a result! Now if only we only we didn’t have to worry about avocados injuring us, we’d be all set.

As of now, Sunions are only being grown in Nevada and Washington. They were first harvested this summer and fall and will go on sale for the first time this month. While they aren’t being sold nationwide just yet, a spokesperson for the growers said “Sunions growers are currently working diligently with stores and supermarkets across the country to find the best locations to offer this groundbreaking product.”  In other words, it could take a while before they hit shelves in a grocery store near you.

In the meantime, you may want to keep some goggles on hand for all your onion chopping endeavors. Or try freezing them in advance. While it might make cutting them a little tougher, it’s worth it for the tear-free eyes.

Almond Flour Waffles

Crispy Gluten-Free Almond Flour Waffles

I love cooking for people. It’s my primary means of showing affection.

And while I’m always happy to work around dietary needs, cooking for my younger brother takes a bit more consideration. Not only is he lactose intolerant, he is also allergic to gluten. (Sadly, this means every single recipe from my mac and cheese cookbook is off the table!)

Rather than see these dietary restrictions as inconveniences, I prefer to see them as challenges. Or, at the least, an excuse to buy and explore alternatives such as buckwheat, rye, and amaranth flours.

8 Food Gifts for a Last-Minute Secret Santa

wrapped Christmas present and Christmas cookies

Anyone who tries to pretend that gift-giving is an easy task clearly has had too much eggnog. The holiday season can be pretty stressful and, at times, finding the perfect present for loved ones feels next to impossible. Throw a Secret Santa into the mix and things can really take a turn for the worse.

The playful holiday gift swap is certainly not without its challenges: from setting a price range to finding that special something that’s universally beloved. Heaven forbid you and your crew begin to swap and steal, then the holiday party can get even messier.

However, there’s a reason they say, “The way to the heart is through the stomach” (I can personally confirm the validity of this statement). Keeping that in mind, you can wow all of your guests with a fun Secret Santa present that will be the talk of your Christmas get-together. With a variety of options (and price ranges) here are a few last-minute food items that make for a lovely Kris Kringle gift.
