Fresh ginger punches your food with a wallop of spice. Peppery and pungent with an outer appearance that barely looks edible, ginger's powerful personality cannot be ignored. The gnarled and bumpy root is not a root at all as it's commonly called, but a rhizome, the underground stem of the flowering ginger plant.
