Beyoncé Shuts Down Beyoncé-Inspired Beer

Brooklyn’s Lineup Brewing is known for their creative, often hilarious beer creations. They even sell an “In Defense of Ghosting IPA,” which you could probably use after a slew of bad dates.

One of their most refreshing beverages is Biëryoncé, a German beer that’s not so subtly inspired by Beyoncé herself. Take one sip and you can sing like you run the world and swirl a baseball bat at cheating lovers. (Okay, maybe don’t do that second part while under the influence.) But not everyone is amused, especially Queen Bey herself (maybe it’s because she only drinks lemonade?). The singer and her team reportedly sent a cease and desist letter to the brewery, demanding they stop selling the beer.

In an interview with Pitchfork, Lineup’s Owner Katarina Martinez said,  “As a Hispanic, female-run business, I am very inspired by her so I thought I’d pay homage. We’re disappointed she didn’t take it as a compliment, but oh well. It was fun while it lasted!” Guess their business plan was anything but flawless.

The now-defunct beer featured a design similar to the cover art of Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled album. This one-time only batch is reportedly still available. So if you want some, run to New York as fast as you can, so you can slay while you’re sloshed.

Beyoncê’s not the first musical genius Lineup’s paid homage to. They’ve also concocted brews honoring Carly Simon (a brilliantly titled “I Bet You Think This Beer Is About You” IPA), Notorious B.I.G. (“Notorious” a juicy East Coast IPA”), as well as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury (“Under Pressure”an English pale ale, naturally.) Since most of those people are dead, they haven’t encountered many legal entanglements, though this latest snag may limit their future associations with mega pop stars. Let’s hope a feud with Taylor Swift is next.
