This Hummus Milkshake Is the Latest Chickpea Dessert Trend

Most people eat hummus as a savory snack. It’s a perfect dip for appetizers and a great sandwich spread. But perhaps we’ve overlooked another use for the Middle Eastern staple: dessert. That’s where Hummus & Pita Co. come in. They just announced the launch of their new hummus milkshake, and while it may sound like something you’d only eat on a dare, it’s actually way more palatable than you can imagine.

While ground chickpeas do serve as the basis of the drink, there is no olive oil, garlic, or lemon found on the ingredient list. Instead the recipe blends tahini, dates, bananas, and almond milk for a sweeter flavor and smoother texture.

“When I finally found the perfect combination of ingredients for the Hummus Shake, which superbly mimic the flavors and textures of a real shake, I even surprised myself,” said founder Dave Pesso in an interview with the NY Daily News.

The shakes come in five flavors—original, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, and butter pecan. And they arrive at select store locations just in time for International Hummus Day on May 13. (We know you have the holiday marked on your calendar, right?)

The Dinner Mom

These milkshakes shouldn’t really come as a surprise to adventurous eaters though. The dessert hummus trend has been on the rise in recent years and this is only the latest iteration. Given the higher amounts of protein and lack of dairy, it’s a slightly healthier alternative to traditional sweets. And consumers and businesses alike are finally taking notice. In fact the Delighted by Dessert Hummus brand even appeared on an episode of “Shark Tank” last fall, where they were awarded $600,000 in funding by Mark Cuban.

If you’d like to take a stab at making your own dessert hummus, we recommend this brownie batter variation. It incorporates dark chocolate chips, coconut oil and cinnamon to create a creamy blend. Dip pretzel sticks in it for the perfect sweet and salty combo!
