The Center for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Carrau infections linked to pre-cut melon sold in grocery stores. The watermelon, honeydew melon, and cantaloupe supplied by Indianapolis-based Caito Foods have been linked to 117 cases of salmonella poisoning in 10 states so far.
Reports of salmonella related to the melon began on March 4 and the infected melon was recalled on April 12, but officials are still cautioning folks not to serve, eat, or sell recalled pre-cut melon and fruit medley products produced by Caito Foods LLC. Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Whole Foods, and Target are among major retailers who the melon was initially sold to, and in U.S. states that include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The melon, which is sold under several brands and labels is packaged on its own but also in fruit salads and fruit medley products.
If you live in any of the distribution states and cannot determine if any pre-cut melon you purchased was or was not produced by Caito Foods LLC, the CDC is recommending to throw it away immediately, and to contact a healthcare provider if you think you may have consumed infected pre-cut melon.
