Ever since I was little, I’d ask my mother what gifts she’d want for any of the big occasions—Mother’s Day, her birthday, Christmas—and she’d invariably answer the same way: “I don’t need anything.” If pressed? “Make me a card.”
As a new-ish mom myself, I find myself relating to her more than I ever have (on this and other matters). Getting a beautiful present is always nice, of course, but more than anything, my taste leans more practical: Is it a product that will help save me precious time that I could otherwise spend kicking back with my little family? (Bonus if it’s something that doesn’t add too much to the clutter that I’m constantly trying to minimize in our N.Y.C. apartment.)
