Top Trending Recipes of 2019

chicken parmesan pasta recipe

When you think 2019 food trends, what springs to mind? A curious mix of low-carb diets, plant-based everything, and fried chicken sandwich mania? Well, that’s about right, but when it comes to the year’s top trending recipe searches, they don’t quite reflect that trifecta—though two of those three do place in the top 10. Check out what people wanted to cook at home this year, based on Google’s top trending recipe searches of 2019.

To be specific, these are the searches that saw big spikes in 2019 compared to the previous year, and only take U.S. searches into account. While some are seasonally oriented and seemingly timeless, it’s no surprise that a couple feel very now (soon to be then).

1. Shepherds Pie Recipe

Comfort food had a good showing in trending searches for 2019, with homey (and homely) shepherd’s pie taking the top spot. Like an easier, large-format answer to the pot pie, this is a worthy cold weather dish that you can change up with various veggies and meats in the filling, but don’t forget the topping too. Mashed potatoes are classic, try other mashed root vegetables for a change, like sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, or kohlrabi—even cauliflower mash (whether because it’s low-carb or just because it tastes delicious). Get our Ground Beef Shepherd’s Pie recipe.

2. Chicken Parmigiana Recipe

Crisp fried chicken, warm red sauce, gooey cheese—it’s no wonder chicken parmesan was high on the list too (albeit under a more Italian spelling, though it’s 100 percent an Italian-American invention). Equally great on a sandwich or topping pasta, chicken parm is a thing of beauty, and sure to satisfy any appetite; if you believe the NY Post, it’s even an aphrodisiac. Get our Chicken Parmesan recipe. (But if you don’t eat meat, our Eggplant Parmesan recipe means you don’t have to miss out.)

3. Ham Glaze Recipe

You may have just had a ham, but no doubt, it will show up again for Easter, so it’s always good to have a go-to ham glaze—or try new twists. We’re partial to the super simple but perfectly balanced blend of honey, whole-grain mustard, dark brown sugar, and butter in our Honey-Mustard Glazed Ham recipe.

4. Charoset Recipe

If you’ve never been to a Passover seder, you might not know about charoset—and might have your doubts about its culinary value when you learn it represents mortar (as in, the stuff that glues bricks together)—but it’s simply a rough mixture of fruit and nuts. Our basic Charoset recipe combines walnuts, apples, sweet wine, and spices, but our Ashkephardic Charoset recipe adds dates, figs, and orange zest and swaps the wine for brandy. Try it with cheese and crackers if you’re fresh out of matzo.

5. Snickerdoodle Cookies Recipe

You may be sick of cookies right about now, but these sweet cinnamon confections made the top 5 trending recipe searches for 2019—in fact, they’re only one of two desserts that ranked. A staple of bake sales and sometimes confused with sugar cookies, snickerdoodles have a secret ingredient that sets them apart (and it’s not the aforementioned cinnamon). Get our Snickerdoodle Cookie recipe.

6. Chaffle Recipe

Savory Cheddar Waffles

Chowhound

Finally, evidence of the low-carb craze emerged in the form of spiking searches for chaffles, which are waffles made from just two ingredients: cheese and eggs. Perfect for those on the keto diet, at least some portion of the searches must have been people simply trying to figure out what the hell a chaffle was. Well, now you know. If your interest is piqued, try this Chaffles recipe, or get our Savory Cheddar Waffles recipe if you’re still eating gluten.

7. Chicken Cacciatore Recipe

Chicken parmigiana had company from chicken cacciatore, which did actually originate in Italy (as a hunter’s stew made with rabbit). It’s a great one-pot meal with plenty of vegetables, though serving it with rice, pasta, or polenta is always a welcome move. Cauliflower rice if you must. Get our Chicken Cacciatore recipe.

8. Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Recipe

Chowhound

The hype was real, and we covered the Popeyes chicken sandwich craze to determine if it was worth it—but we’re not surprised people were also searching for how to make it at home. Even when it wasn’t sold out, it seemed like a huge hassle to attempt to procure (and actually proved dangerous in some sad, bewildering cases). Stay home and try this Popeyes Chicken Sandwich copycat recipe for a true taste of 2019, or go more timelessly old-fashioned with our Fried Chicken Biscuit Sandwich recipe.

9. Tater Tot Casserole Recipe

Proving people absolutely still wanted carbs, tater tot casserole recipe searches spiked too. Homemade tots would be an amazing touch, but also missing the point—the frozen variety make for an easy, creamy, crispy (and unapologetically carby!) crust for whatever casserole filling you like. Try this Cheesy Ground Beef Tater Tot Casserole recipe, or this Tater Tot Breakfast Casserole recipe for your next hangover brunch.

10. King Cake Recipe

A bit more complicated than snickerdoodles, king cake was the other sweet to snag a spot in the top trending recipe searches. Traditionally served for Mardi Gras, this brioche pastry ring enfolds a cinnamon-flecked filling and features green, gold, and purple sugar (or sprinkles) atop the literal icing on the cake—but don’t forget about the other distinguishing feature: the little plastic baby hidden inside. Get our King Cake recipe.

11. Hot Toddy Recipe

Chowhound

As for the top trending drink recipe searches, “Pornstar Martini” (featuring passion fruit) and “Sex on the Beach” actually ranked higher, but right now, we’d take a hot toddy over either to help combat the cold. Get our Apple Brandy Hot Toddy recipe for a welcome twist.

12. Sidecar Drink Recipe

Chowhound

We’d also take a simple sidecar over a sweet Buttery Nipple shot, though the latter ranked one spot higher than the sidecar in trending searches for 2019. Classically made from brandy, Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice, our Elderflower Sidecar recipe adds a touch of St. Germain for a floral dimension.

13. Hot Buttered Rum Recipe

Hot Buttered Rum

Chowhound

Another seasonally appropriate drink that spiked in searches, hot buttered rum isn’t just a clever name; in addition to the titular ingredients, it includes warm spices and sugar, but no lemon to sharpen the mix. Get our Hot Buttered Rum recipe.

14. Aperol Spritz Recipe

Chowhound

This search no doubt dovetailed with the food fight over whether or not the Aperol spritz is a good drink (or whether, as Rebekah Peppler insisted, it’s akin to “a Capri Sun after soccer practice”—and “not in a good way.”) We’d take it over hard seltzer any day. Get our Aperol Spritz recipe.

15. Hurricane Drink Recipe

Chowhound

Something to wash down the king cake, perhaps? Another New Orleans treat, the Hurricane cocktail saw a healthy spike in searches in 2019 too (as did the similarly disastrously named Mudslide, and Lynchburg Lemonade, rounding out the top 10 trending drink search list). It still tastes as bracing as it did when Pat O’Brien’s started serving it in the French Quarter in the 1930s, and is not just for spring break. Get our Hurricane Cocktail recipe (try it with homemade grenadine to take it to the next level).
